Bluff oyster festival

This May I had the amazing opportunity to travel around New Zealand. Of course I looked around for food events/cities to go to. I visited several wineries in Hawke’s Bay and Central Otago, but as amazing as biking to the wineries was, nothing will top the Bluff Oyster Festival.

Just look at those oysters!

The festival was filled with food stands, wine & beer, music, foodies, locals and everything in between. Everyone was enjoying themselves and stuffing themselves with the great food that the stands were offering.

There was a big crowd around the Kina (Sea Urchin/Uni) stand, I went to see what all the commotion was about. They were splitting the kina open, and there was a man slurping them from the shell! I settled for a couple of kina shots that were amazing : P!

While at the festival I also discovered one of my favourite beers. Mac’s Pilsener! Delicious, perfect balance of hops, a great beer to enjoy some fish and chips or oysters to.

This was my favourite dish from the festival. Seared Scallops with macadamia nut oil. They were very tender, flavourful, and I thought it was awesome that they served them as they do in France: with the roe/coral. It’s delicious! Americans don’t know what they’re missing out on.
